#86 Solace - 100 Drabbles of Summer

“Shouldn’t you be comforting him, making him feel better?” Bobby snarled at me as he took a rough blanket from the backseat of the Impala and draped it over Dean’s shoulders. Dean was staring at the spot where Lucifer and Michael had been sucked into Hell.

“Have you spent time with him?” Dean snorted, finally showing some life. “Cas isn’t know for the warm cuddlies.”

“I am sorry, Dean.” It wasn’t much, but it was all I could say. He was right. I am not good at offering solace, but I could feel his pain. I didn’t care for it.

#60 Toad - 100 Drabbles of Summer

“Toads!!” Dean slammed on the brakes of the Impala, and I hit the back of the bench seat with a thud. “It’s a god damn rain of toads!”

Sam yelped when a bloated toad hit the windshield spidering the glass and leaving a smear of blood and toad guts. Another hit the hood, and I knew Dean was terrified that there might be a scratch in the car’s pristine black paint.

“I would suggest finding cover, Dead.” The sky was a churning mass of dark clouds, while the ground was covered in squirming masses of dead, dying and hopping amphibians.

“We have no call to assist these heathens,” the missionary said with a snort, glaring at the huddled masses of the homeless, trying to find shelter from the monsoon. He kicked at a sodden Chinese paper lantern that had fallen into the mud.

“But they are all God’s children. Are we not here to spread his word?” his assistant asked.

“They have no interest in our teachings.”

“But sir, please!”

Castiel watched from the branches of a tree, wearing the shape of a crow, his black feathers puffed out to keep him warm. He was sorely disappointed in his charge.

The sparkle and shine of gold drew my eyes back yet again. No matter how many times I winged away to find Dean, I always came back to her. Jimmy’s child, Claire, had become as important to me as she had been to him. He gave up his body to spare her, and I would protect her like she was my child.

Her mother doesn’t know I’m here, but Claire knows. She hosted my essence for a few brief moments, but she knows that I’m here. I catch a small smile when her eyes meet mine across the parking lot.

#39 Superstition - 100 Drabbles of Summer

I watched as Dean pricked the end of his finger and carefully counted thirteen drops of blood into the caldron before sticking it into his mouth. Yet another distasteful human habit, and is more reminiscent of animals than of the Father.

“This should do it,” Bobby said as he grated a clove of garlic into the vile mixture of Dean’s blood and mandrake. “Ain’t nothing can break the mojo of this spell, Dean.”

“I could.” I folded my arms across my chest. “As could any angel.”

“Well we didn’t make it to keep angels away. Pray that it stops demons.”
